**The following assignment applies to both novels assigned in seventh grade, and ONLY Tom Sawyer for eighth grade. **

Expectation:  The summer reading books will be used in a variety of ways during the beginning of the year and throughout the year as a point of reference.  Additional activities once school begins will include: assessment of reading (quiz), an essay to begin the year writing, and a treasure box activity.

TASK DURING READING:  During your reading, you are to keep a Reader’s Log.   A Reader’s Log should show your reflection on the reading along with just a little bit of summary.  See below for an example and click here for student examples from this year.

Create a one paragraph entry for the determined amount (based on pages in your book) for a total of at least ten entries of one paragraph each.  An example might be something like the following:

  • Pages 1-20:  I’ve just read the first chapter and I’m not sure what the author has in mind for the rest of the book.  So far I’ve read about the main character who happens to be my age.  I can relate to her in that we enjoy some of the same things like soccer and reading, but I cannot even imagine working five a day on the weekends and waking up at 4 a.m.!  She must have determination and some really good reason to do this.  I wonder why she has a job.  Hopefully my first job will be fun.  In the next chapter, I predict that the main character will encounter some kind of trouble at her job and it may end up being in jeopardy.
  •
  • Note that the above log has listed some details about the reading (the main characters hobbies and she’s got to work at 4 a.m.) but has not summarized the reading.
  • Note also that this log entry has included the reader’s reaction and reflection to and about the reading (I can’t imagine…I enjoy soccer…) The reader has related what they’ve read to their own personal experience and commented about that experience.
  • At the end of the entry is a prediction for the next section of reading.  The prediction does not have to be complicated, just based on what you've read so far.  It does not count against you if your prediction is wrong - nor do you receive credit for being right (but, good for you!)

Use the following prompts to help you if you get stuck during the Reader’s Log process:

·        How do you feel about the events in the book so far?

·        Do you relate to any of the characters?

·        What things do you have in common with events in the book?

·        What ideas or events are most foreign to you?

·        How would you react to different situations in the book if you were a person in the book?

Grading

Your grade for this book report will consist entirely of the successful completion of your Reader’s Log.  The following criteria and scores will be used to determine your grade.

Ø      Reader’s Log is typed with title of book (appropriate genre and reading level) - 25 points

Ø      Reader reflects and analyzes the reading appropriately - 50 points

Ø      At least ten logs are completed 25 points
