Jesus said to them, ‘I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. John 6:35
First Eucharist or First Holy Communion is the common name for a person’s first reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist. Roman Catholics recognize the importance of this event because the Eucharist is the central focus of the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. A child baptized as an infant into the family of God now takes place at the Lord’s table. This is a momentous event for the child, the family, and the parish community.
Preparing for First Communion
Sacramental preparation for First Communion typically starts at seven years of age or usually 2nd grade and takes place in one year. Preparation begins in the early fall and involves parents and children. Catechetical instruction in the year immediately before starting the sacramental preparation process is required.
Children age 8+
First Communion for baptized Catholic children who are older than age eight or First Communion for children baptized in another Christian denomination who wish to pursue the Catholic faith participate in a process called Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults adapted for Children— also known as Children’s Catechumen and commonly referred to as RCIC.
